If you’d like to add an elegant look to your home, use tumbled travertine tiles on your bathroom, living room or kitchen floors. Travertine can be purchased in many different finishes and colors, from neutral, natural colors like reddish brown, tan, gold and creamy white. The color of the stone you end up with is largely dependent on the iron content and impurities of your stone.

Travertine is a member of the limestone family, and will turn into marble over time. It is sometimes even called travertine marble. It is made up of calcium carbonate, and can sometimes be found in deposits near hot or warm springs.

Travertine tiles make excellent natural stone pavers, since they can withstand extremely cold conditions, and many thawing and freezing cycles. Travertine pavers also work well in humid and tropical climates. Their coolness is natural, which is a great walking surface for bare feet in warm climates. They also repel mildew and mold, so you don’t need to worry about dousing them with bleach, like some stones may require.

Travertine tiles are stronger than either asphalt or concrete when used for paving, and their surface resists cracking. They are appealing visually too, which adds to your home’s value. Also, if you lay travertine and then later wish to move it, you can remove it and lay it again elsewhere. Of course, tumbled travertine tiles are also very earth-friendly since they are 100% natural stone.

If you compare brick pavers to travertine pavers, you’ll learn that travertine pavers resist heat, so they won’t cause burns to bare feet in the summer, and they won’t freeze even in bitter cold. They also won’t crumble in a few years, like brick pavers may. And since travertine is natural, each piece is unique, so your project will show off a look that is different from anyone else’s. Travertine has occurred in nature for thousands of years, so you’re sure to enjoy them in or around your home.

You can find travertine for your home as easily as just clicking a mouse. Or you can shop locally, in landscape company lots or home improvement stores. There are various companies online that sell travertine, so even if you plan to buy locally, you can see the many different and unique features of travertine online first.

As you may find with any stone material, travertine has the benefits of aesthetic appeal and durability. There aren’t many stones that are more beautiful, regardless of what texture you are shopping for. Travertine is not invincible like marble or granite when it comes to wear or staining, so you’ll want to be aware that spills should be wiped up right away or they’ll etch your travertine tiles.

Make sure that you never use citric acid or vinegar based cleaners on travertine, since they can stain and erode the surface. Be sure to apply a good sealant when you lay a travertine floor, if it will be in contact with water at all. If you polish the surface of tumbled travertine tiles, they will be more fully resistant to water and oil damage than stone that is unfinished.

When you are deciding whether to lay travertine mosaic tiles in your home, consider what type of surface you are tiling. Natural stone is very durable, but it’s not invincible. Travertine is particularly vulnerable to lemon juice and other acids, since they can damage the stone’s surface.

You will be choosing between several types of travertine, once you pick it as your flooring of choice. You can compare tumbled, brushed, honed and polished travertine. Honed and polished travertine resemble marble, and they have a very smooth finish. Tumbled and marbled travertine look more natural, and thus they have more imperfections.

Next, select a color to concentrate on. Travertine comes in various natural shades, like coral red, medium gray and light tan. All of these tones are neutral, and they look appealing when they are mixed. Travertine tiles can also be found in shapes that range from large rectangles to smaller squares.

Buy travertine tile in a size and shape that will fit the area that you are tiling. Small tiles are better for backsplashes in the kitchen, whereas large tiles work better for flooring. You can mix sizes and shapes in order to create various interesting patterns, and to add a unique look to your home.

After you install travertine mosaic tiles, be sure to seal them. Use a quality sealant, and use proper maintenance and care to protect your travertine from spills. Buy cleaning supplies made especially for surfaces like travertine from your tile dealer.

When you install travertine flooring, it adds to your home’s value, and can be used inside or out. This stone is especially popular for bathroom floors and patios. It is not a good choice for countertops, because it does stain so easily. If you spill something on your travertine floor, clean it up right away, or the acid can eat away at the finish of your tiles. Don’t use cleaners with acids in them to clean your travertine, because they will act to corrode the stone.

Travertine tile has been a popular stone for tiling for many years. It is abundant and beautifully durable. Today, travertine is enjoying a resurgence, because people are once again entranced by its beauty. Many architects and designers use colorful travertine tiles for walls, flooring, kitchens and bathrooms.

Travertine limestone was originally cut along with the grain of the stone, which helped to create a pattern of linear veining. This was the way it looked, for a long time. Then, the carvers of stone discovered that there are lovely swirling patterns created when you cut travertine against the natural grain.

70 percent of the stone flooring that is used in the United States in recent years is travertine stone that has been cross-cut. It is used almost as often on walls as on floors. There aren’t any other stone types that compare with travertine for the range of colors and sturdy integrity. Since sealers are now commonly used, porous mosaic tiles are used even more often, and in more applications, than they were before.

There are many reasons for – and a few against – using travertine countertops in your kitchen. Travertine is a very affordable and popular kitchen countertop, and is similar to marble, in beauty and durability. You can find travertine in many soft and earthy colors, including delightful shades of ivory, beige, cream, gold and walnut. The colors are formed by the iron content and other earthly impurities. The stones add a pleasing touch to your decor, and can be used as flooring or wall tiles and countertops. They are available in tumbled, brushed, matte and polished finishes.

Travertine tiled countertops show off a porous and smooth natural stone that has a creamy, rich hue. Used on countertops, they can be durable and lovely. They are resistant to heat, and they give your home a well-decorated look.

Travertine can be used for backsplashes, showers and fireplace panels. They are fairly easy to cut and shape, compared to porcelain tiles, so it’s easy to fill small or oddly shaped spaces. Travertine kitchen and bathroom countertops are sturdy, somewhat like marble. They resist cracking, and you can buy them in tile or slab form. They can be as small as tiny tiles or as large as 36 inch tiles. Various patterns that are created by the stone’s natural veining give your house an interesting look. They have a warmth that appeals to most homeowners.

There are also reasons to be careful when creating travertine countertops for your bathroom or kitchen. Travertine is very reactive, and is easily etched by citrus juices or acids. Even a minor spill can lead to a staining of the stone. It’s not a good idea to install travertine as a kitchen countertop, if you do a lot of cooking, and they don’t react well to many different kinds of spills. You will need to buy special products to maintain and clean travertine when it’s used as a countertop. The tiles need to be sealed and polished properly to avoid staining.

Travertine can be found in four types of finishes, some of which are usable for countertops. These types are polished, honed, tumbled or brushed. The surface of the stone you use will be an indicator of how shiny your countertops will look. To clean the tiles, be sure to remember that they are porous. The entire area should be sealed, in order to protect it. This will also help to fill in the pores in the stone, to help it repel spills until you wipe them off.

You will need to dust off countertops made of travertine, using a dry, untreated rag. Dirt, grit and sand can be damaging to the surface of natural stone, as they are quite abrasive. So can various types of acid, including citrus. You can use a dirt buster to vacuum off bathroom countertops made of travertine, but be careful not to scratch the surface. The use of a proper sealant will work wonders in keeping your travertine countertops looking smooth and lovely.

Travertine bathroom floors are stylish and durable, as long as they are properly sealed. You can combine various sized tiles and darker accent bands for the walls, and around the tub. You can use various types of travertine, including the unique Castello travertine type of tiles, which come from quarries in Italy. This material has been used in many formats, creating spaces that are unique and timeless.

The decor of a travertine tiled bathroom has a comfortable, warm feel, and this is only enhanced with the natural lightness, and the neutral tones of travertine on the walls and floors. Travertine tiles lend an air of elegance, while still keeping to the design theme that you started with. Your shower stall exterior can feature a detailed pattern of travertine, and inside the shower, you can combine square tiles inset with hexagon tiles.

Go a step beyond what some other designers have done, and use travertine in a variety of formats and applications. You can step beyond the use of traditional rectangular and square tiles to include tiles placed into hexagon shapes. These shapes create a warm and unique field of soft colors, including taupe, and with a brushed finish, they will add to the Old World charm in your room. The floor’s perimeter can feature a rectangle of travertine tiles, some of which may need to be cut, to accommodate the shower and tub.

Your field of hexagon travertine bathroom tiles can use wide grout joints that will help to continue your overall theme. You can contrast these with travertine border tiles and use mosaic pieces in a strip between sections. This also shows off a contrast to the floor pattern. Varying sizes of travertine and dark accent bands can cover your vertical surfaces. Around the vanity, your design may use larger format brushed travertine tiles, and hexagon tiles will form your backsplash. Be sure to seal the tiles well, especially on the backsplash.

The exterior of your shower can feature a pattern that is similar, with extra 8×8 tiles at the bottom of the design. Inside the shower, your design can be primarily composed of 8×8 travertine tiles in a softer color, inset with a selection of 6×6 hexagon-shaped tiles, which you can creatively frame with a small black granite band.

When travertine tile is processed, it is pulled from quarries in large blocks, that are cut into what you will know as travertine tiles. They may be cross-cut, showing the grain of the stone, or vein-cut, in which the stone is cut into layers which make more mottles and tiger-stripe effects.

After travertine has been cut from the quarry, it is selected for the variances in its coloring, and may be honed, where the tile’s surface is sanded, giving you a matte finish. Alternately, it may be tumbled, with bearings and gravel, to give it an aged, rough-hewn look. Travertine might also be brushed, where a wire brush gives the surface a worn look, or filled, where the holes are filled in with epoxy. Then it more resembles the travertine bathroom tiles you know.

Travertine can be used while still in its natural state, but after it is laid, you will need to use a travertine sealer to make sure that water doesn’t seep into its crevices and holes. The holes in travertine tiles may be filled with epoxy before they are sent to your local landscaping design location, but some water can still find its way in if you don’t seal the tile. If you polish travertine that isn’t sealed, it won’t be as shiny as granite or marble, and the powders used to polish it may become accumulated in the holes, making the tiles difficult to clean. Be sure not to clean travertine with water pressure higher than 800 PSI, so that you don’t loosen the epoxy. Never use water under pressure to clean your travertine tiles if the grout is not in good condition.

Travertine is just one of several natural types of stones that can be used for garden paths and paving patios. It’s sometimes called travertine marble or travertine limestone. The stone has pitted troughs and holes in the surface, which is why it needs to be sealed when it is laid. You can polish it to a shiny, smooth finish, and the various colors from coral red to gray make for lovely floor installations.

Travertine can be etched when acids like those in juice and soft drinks are spilled on it, and chemical cleaners that are acid-based can also cause unwanted etching. Travertine absorbs liquids and oils, and is easier to stain than marble. If you use this type of stone in a wet room like a bathroom or kitchen, be sure to use a travertine sealer to keep the acids of everyday living out of its pores.

Travertine may occasionally be used for counter tops, but this is not a recommended usage, since it’s too easy to etch or scratch. It does work well as a flooring type, and it makes smaller areas look and feel larger than they are. Travertine surface finishes vary from stone to stone. Not all can be polished to a high gloss, only the harder stones. You’ll never find travertine that is as shiny as granite and marble.

Travertine is used in four finish types, those being tumbled, honed, brushed and polished. The type of surface stone used will determine how shiny – or dull – your floor will be. To clean travertine tiles, remember how porous they are. Treat the entire surface with a sealer, to protect it. This will fill in the pores and will repel surface spills, until you can wipe them off.

You’ll want to dust mop travertine floors indoors using a dry and non-treated mop. Grit, dirt and sand are damaging to surfaces of natural stone, since they are abrasive. Area rugs inside doors or doorways will help to keep down the amount of dirt and sand that is tracked into a room with a travertine floor. Make sure that the mat or rug’s underside is non-slip. You can vacuum travertine, but don’t use an older or well-worn vacuum, because the old brushes and pitted wheels may damage the surface. A travertine sealer will help to keep away a lot of the indoor hazards to the stone.

When you design your home with travertine flooring, you will appreciate its durability and rustic good looks. To get the best design, you will need to understand the properties of the stone.

You’ve probably heard of travertine tiles, or seen lovely pictures in design magazines, or perhaps a family member or friend is planning to install it. You may be surprised to see a wide variety of finishes and colors in travertine tiles. The styles and looks you can achieve with travertine tiles can be numerous. Learning about the colors and properties of travertine can be helpful in choosing the look that is right for you.

Travertine is similar to limestone in its composition, and is a sedimentary rock. The distinctive look that it shows off is formed by water and minerals evaporating over time, and by the processes of geothermal springs. It is usually tan in color, although the colors can range from light creams to deep and golden browns. You can even find this type of tile in striated silver and Persian red colors.

Many travertine tiles can be purchased in several different finishes. They can be cross-cut, polished, honed, cobbled or tumbled. Tiles that are cobbled or tumbled will generally be left unfilled, meaning that the holes and pores are left alone, which adds to the stone’s rustic appearance. If your travertine flooring tiles have larger holes that go all the way through the stone, you should fill them with grout when you install them.

Polished and honed travertine tiles are usually filled when they are finished, at the factory. They may be called polished and filled, or honed and filled. Most manufacturers will attempt to match the stone’s color to the color of epoxy fill, but you may find some tiles where the filler is lighter than the stone. Sometimes the filler may be an entirely different color. Ask for samples from the currently available lots, to make sure you don’t have these sometimes undesirable colors in your tiles.

X-cut or cross cut travertine tiles are cut against the stone’s natural grain. This helps to produce a very distinctive pattern, sometimes called “Fiorito”, which is Italian for “flowers”.

One common travertine is called Travertine Chiaro, which is a light stone ranging in color from deep sandy to light tan. Sometimes these ivory or light travertine tiles work as well on kitchen backsplashes as they do on flooring projects.

Another commonly seen travertine tile is Travertine Noce, which is a golden brown. It can take on a gray and dusky tone when it’s tumbled, or lighten into a mocha tone when it is polished or honed. Sometimes this is referred to as dark travertine or walnut travertine. This makes a very workable flooring material, and its varied, dark tones will help hide wear and tear and dirt very well.

Silver travertine is a very distinctive stone, and it has thick veins with colored layers that move across the stone. Laying it horizontally in a narrow area will widen the look of the space, and this is only one of the ways that using travertine flooring will add to the beauty of your home.

Travertine pavers are an innovative paving material that’s just a bit different than most other materials used for this purpose. If you’re looking for natural materials, bluestone is sometimes used, as long as you’re not tiling a pool area, since these pavers retain the heat too well. But travertine pavers are cool to walk on, and they resist the conditions of freezing and thawing, so they usually won’t crack.

Travertine tile pavers come in various lovely colors, and your designer may suggest a color that goes well with your home, and your surroundings. One popular color is Manchester, which is a tan color sometimes described as caramel or camel, interestingly enough. But this color also shows the rich hues of a golden or mahogany wood. If you have brick in your house with tan grout, the color of the Manchester travertine will pick up the grout color and compliment the brick. Likewise, if you have a walkway made from tan aggregate, that will blend well with this shade of travertine.

You may not realize how dramatic that travertine pavers will look until after you have installed it. Even before they are washed or sealed, you will be able to imagine how beautiful the finished product will be. The stones may look like a kaleidoscope of patterns and colors, ranging from very light to dark. Just the color range creates an interesting look. But you can also see various types of patterns, which reminds you that it’s natural stone.

There are some travertine pieces that may be unbelievable. They may show off swirled patterns through the stone, and others have color washes, and their own personalities. When you select natural stones for your project, you don’t really get the overall picture from looking at one piece. Lay down a number of pieces from the lot in the area where you want to use them. Stones may greatly vary from each other, and looking at many different stones will give you the most accurate representation. They are all different, since they are natural, but that’s part of the beauty.

While pavers of the Andes Travertine Collection are normally smooth, some may have holes. Water may sit in the holes, if there has been recent rain. Also, if the stones have been tumbled, the edges will be uneven, and they might have a rough appearance, which is neither good nor bed, other than whether you’d prefer using more evenly-edged tiles. Sometimes it’s easier to place pavers with more even edges.

Travertine paver materials have been gaining in popularity in recent years. They are durable and affordable natural stones that can give long-lasting beauty around your home. Travertine has a pitted surface, and this adds to the stone’s texture. It is cut from quarries, and it can help to create old-world looks around your home. Travertine doesn’t fade like concrete may, and it won’t show any surface cracking. Pavers don’t retain heat, and they have a non-skid surface that works well outdoors. Travertine pavers are stronger than those made by man, so they can even be used for driveways.

When you are cleaning travertine floor tiles, you need to follow the correct technique and use the right cleansers, so that you don’t damage the tiles. Travertine is a stone material similar to limestone. It is made of porous calcite, and its surface has small crevices and holes. The unique colors, texture and patterns have a natural warmth, that makes them ideal not only for floors, but for walls as well. It is also used on backsplashes and patios. Travertine tiles can be cleaned with procedures similar to those used for cleaning limestone or marble. The characteristics and composition of all three are a lot alike.

Once you install travertine tiles, they can last for a long time. They are elegant and durable, and easy to maintain if you clean them correctly. First, you should sweep the tiles with a soft broom, or clean them with a vacuum cleaner with a glider fitted for this reason. Sweep regularly, so that the dirt and dust particles on the surface of the tile don’t enter the tiles’ tiny pores.

After you sweep your tiles, select the right product to clean them. Normal tile cleaners don’t work well on travertine, because you need one with a neutral pH value. Tile cleaners for travertine tiles are mild soaps which can be suitable for stone more than tile. Read the instructions provided by the cleansers’ manufacturers, to make sure it will work on your travertine floor tiles.

When you clean travertine tiles with any liquid, you must use caution, because the porous tiles will absorb liquids, and this could harm the surface. Prepare your proper tile cleanser by mixing your cleanser with clean water, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a clean or new microfiber mop, dip it into your solution, and wring all the excess water from the mop, and then remove the dirt and grime from the tiles with the mop.

Next, take a soft cloth piece and dampen it in clean water, and then wring it out. Wipe the tiles to make sure they are free from residues that may have been left behind by the cleanser. Dry the tiles off with a dry cloth. This mopping should be done once every week or two.

Travertine tiles are easily stained, so sealant should be applied to prevent any unwanted marking on the tiles. You should apply this about once every year. Use a clear epoxy resin for this sealing process. This will help you to maintain the look, and will give the tiles a glossy finish. A sealed surface won’t require you to clean it as frequently.

When you polish travertine tiles, it will help to keep their glossy shine showing through. Use floor polishes that are made for stone. Clean up any liquid spills as soon as you see them, so they won’t damage the surface of your floor. If you leave spills standing, they will be absorbed into the tile and may cause damage. Don’t use abrasives on travertine floor tiles, as these may dull your floor.

Travertine tile has traditionally been used to create decorative flooring, whether it is located in an office or a home. This type of tile is available in such lovely colors as cream, walnut, ivory and gold. In addition to making an excellent flooring choice, these tiles can also be used as counter tops and wall coverings.

Travertine is a natural stone, formed under the surface of the earth, so each tile has its own unique appearance. They are polished so that the tiles are elegant, and you can choose various finishes, like tumbled, matte, brushed and shiny. These tiles are useful in kitchens and bathrooms, although some professionals don’t recommend it for use in busy kitchens. With modern techniques, travertine flooring materials can be found in well-polished finishes.

Travertine floor tiles are very popular due to their durability and exquisite appearance. If they are properly installed, this type of tile will give you great satisfaction. They are cheaper than marble or ceramic tile, and offer a lot of the same enhancements as marble tiles do. When selecting your tiles, keep the colors and décor of the room in mind, so that your tiles will accentuate your style.

Once you have selected the travertine tiles you want to install, there are various ways to have it prepared, such as polishing, which gives your tiles a shiny look, and filling, which shows a more solid surface. Brushing gives your tiles a textured, worn surface.

Using travertine tile is an affordable way to showcase natural stone in your home. It can be used either outdoors or indoors, and it affords you a natural, affordable, low maintenance, rustic, non-skid flooring option. You can find these tiles as small as an inch square and as large as three feet square. In addition to flooring, it is often used for walls, borders, accent pieces, travertine tile backsplashes and shower floors.

Travertine tiles are rectified, meaning that they can be installed with almost no grout at all. This makes your floor more smooth, without obvious grout lines. Travertine tiles give you a beautiful and natural look with minimal interference from grout lines.

Since travertine tiles come from natural sources, they do have interesting variations, that can make your floor different from everyone else’s. The beauty comes from variations that aren’t man-made, so if you happen to chip one, you’ll see the same color and pattern as you find on the surface. Travertine is also stronger than porcelain that is made by man.

Installing travertine tiles should be left to professionals. Once travertine is installed, it needs to be sealed. Use a quality seal product that will protect your floor for a long time. Hand soap and warm water will be enough to do travertine tiles’ cleaning, with no acids or chemicals required. Travertine tiles are harder than limestone or marble tile, so they work wonderfully in high traffic areas, outdoor areas, homes and commercial buildings.

Travertine tiles are available in most parts of the country, and the original stone is generally imported from Turkey. Travertine Tile flooring with chiseled edges is ideal for contractors and homeowners alike, who wish to upgrade from vinyl or linoleum to natural stone.
